Dr. Stanwix Biography

Dr. Stanwix comes from an exceptional educational pedigree, including Ivy League education, and performed his plastic and reconstructive surgery training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, ranked the number one hospital in the country for over twenty years. He is licensed in Virginia, works at Stanwix Plastic Surgery, and performs surgery at St Mary’s and St. Francis Hospitals.

Originally from Rochester, New York, he completed undergraduate studies at the prestigious University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Summa Cum Laude, while earning numerous awards, honors, and inducted into multiple honor societies (including Phi Beta Kappa).  His education continued at Dartmouth Medical School, where he graduated in the top of his class with honors (only given to a limited few students) and received the award for outstanding surgical student of the year.  It was during this time that Dr. Stanwix was selected as one of six medical school students in the country to attend a public health leadership conference in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Stanwix trained at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and was one of the best.  His outstanding colleague, patient, and peer review evaluations result from his dedication to patient care, meticulous surgical work, and plastic surgery knowledge base. It was during this training, that Dr. Stanwix was featured on the ABC reality documentary “Hopkins” (http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/hopkinsabc).  Dr. Stanwix has performed groundbreaking research in facial surgery (including transplantation), abdominal plastic surgery, and breast surgery.  He is widely published because of his numerous research studies and has authored influential papers on plastic surgery in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Annals of Plastic Surgery, publishing over twelve landmark articles in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals.   Not only has he also authored four book chapters in current leading plastic surgery textbooks, but also speaks nationally and internationally on these topics and is a requested speaker at the major medical centers.  During his training, Dr. Stanwix was selected as part of the facial transplantation team at University of Maryland/R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and played an integral part in the most extensive face transplant performed in the world to date. Importantly, he continues a life of philanthropy; he graciously volunteers his time and unique skills on medical mission trips to correct children born with facial deformities (Vietnam-Changing Children Lives).

Dr. Stanwix performs all areas of reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.  In particular, he brings a unique training to the Richmond area with his cutting edge microvascular breast reconstruction.  Through DIEP and other microvascular breast reconstructive surgeries (SGAP, TUG), he can create a new breast from the patient’s own tissue avoiding the need for synthetic materials.

Dr. Stanwix commitment to patients is exemplified in his caring bedside manner, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to create a natural appearance.  He believes that your care should be customized to you and your body, your lifestyle, and gets to know both of those aspects before recommending a procedure. He strives for perfection as he focuses on the art of rejuvenation surgery.  Using innovative technology and techniques, as well as a gift for an “artistic eye,” Dr. Stanwix performs all avenues of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery with a special emphasis on all avenues of cosmetic surgery.
